Things to see in Berkeley County
- Admiral Boarman House at 208 South Queen Street in Martinsburg. One of the oldest brick houses in Martinsburg, circa 1802. Now the home of the Boarman Arts Center which features exhibits and a wide range of workshops. Open 10:AM to 5:PM Tuesday through Saturday. (304) 263-0224
- General Adam Stephen House located at 309-313 East John Street in Martinsburg. Home of the founder of Martinsburg. Built in 1774-1789, over looking Tuscarora Creek. Restored smokehouse, reconstructed log building, and restored triple brick building. On National Register of Historic Places. Open Saturday and Sunday, 2:PM to 5:PM, May through October. - Apollo Civic Theatre at 128 East Martin Street in Martinsburg. Constructed in 1913, it was one of the first theatres built in West Virginia for the new medium of motion pictures.Now home to a local theatrical group. Restored to its original interior, the building also features the Roseland Ballroom. Tours by appointment. (304) 263-6766
- Belle Boyd House and Museum at 126 East Race Street in Martinsburg. Greek revivial home built in 1853 by Benjamin Reed Boyd. Childhood home of Belle Boyd, famous Confederate spy. Features Civil War Museum, local artifacts of the Civil War. Special exhibit of period clothing and accessories. Extensive archives and genealogy section. Open Wednesday through Saturday, 10:AM to 4:PM, year round. Wednesday 6:30 PM to 9:PM for archives only. Special tours available.
- Martinsburg Historic District The downtown area is the most comprehensive of Martinsburg's historical districts. Complexes of pre-Civil War structures, including Federal and Greek-revival residences on John, Race and North Spring Streets.
- Tuscarora Church in Martinsburg. Originally established by Scotch-Irish Presbyterians in 1740, the present lovely old church was built in 1802. Early worshippers hung their guns on pegs during services, and similar pegs can now be seen in the sanctuary. Open year round by appointment. Sunday services held at 11:AM. (304) 263-4579
- Bunker Hill Flour Mill One of the first mill sites in Berkeley County; dates back to 1735. Built on original land grant. Numerous exhibits. Located south of Martinsburg off of Rt. 11 in Bunker Hill
- Olde Kilbourn Mill in Martinsburg. 19th century restored hosiery mill. Located in a 7 acre mill complex. Antiques, Crafters Gallery, Panhandle Pottery, and Design. Open 7 days a week.(304) 263-2900
- Morgan Cabin.Built in 1731-1734 by Colonel Morgan Morgan, it was home of West Virginia's first permanent settler. Rebuilt with part of the original logs during the 1976 bicentennial celebration. Located in Bunker Hill, follow WV RT.26 off of RT.11, 8 miles south of Martinsburg. Open Sunday from 2:PM to 5:PM, May through August. Group tours available. (304) 229-8946
- Gerrard House in Gerrardstown. One of the oldest stone houses in the state. Open weekends May through October, 10:AM to 5:PM. Group Tours available.
- L. Norman Dillon Farm Museum located west of Martinsburg on RT.9 in Hedgesville. Museum contains many pieces of old farm equipment, some of which date back to pre-Civil War days. Begun by Mr. Dillon, a lifelong farmer in Berkeley County, to create a facility to preserve the rich heritage of the agriculture industry of the area. - Sleepy Creek Public Hunting and Fishing Area in Hedgesville. 27,000 acres with 250 acre lake. Hunting and fishing in season. Beautiful wilderness area. Open year round. (304) 754-3855
Jefferson County
- Charles Town Races offering thoroughbred horse racing. Enclosed grandstand and clubhouse.(304) 728-7001
- Jefferson County Courthouse. Built in 1803, site of John Brown's trial in 1859. Open year round during normal business hours.(304) 728-7713
- Harpers Ferry and Harpers Ferry National Historic Park located at the confluence of the Shenandoah and Potomac Rivers, 6 miles east of Charles Town on RT. 340. St. Peters Church, shops, arsenal, wax museum, hiking trails and more. Exhibits and interpretive presentations. Open year round. (304) 535-6029
- Harper House in Harpers Ferry. Robert Harper built the house in 1780. It faces a hillside with cave-like cellars carved from stone.
- St. Peter's Catholic Church in Harpers Ferry. Built in 1830, this was the only church in Harpers Ferry that conducted services undisturbed by either army during the Civil War. During the war the church flew the Union Jack flag of Great Britain to ensure its neutrality. Also offers a great view of the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah. "Beautiful view." Bring the camera!
- Shepherdstown, located between Martinsburg and Charles Town, is the oldest town in West Virginia. The site of James Rumsey's first successful demonstration of the steamboat in 1787. Home to the Contemporary American Theatre Festival. The town is very popular for its trendy shops and restaurants as well as, that "small college town" atmosphere.
- Summit Point Raceway in Summit Point, appromimately 5 miles west of Charles Town. Events include world-class auto and motorcycle racing. Open most week-ends from April through October. Concessions offered. (304) 725-8444
Morgan County
- Berkeley Springs home to the oldest spa in the nation. Contains George Washington's tub. Officially formed as Town of Bath in 1776 by George Washington and his armies.
- Berkeley Castle in Berkeley Springs. Built by Colonel Samuel Taylor Suit in 1885 for his bride, Rosa Pelham. Located on a mountain side, the site offers a commanding view of the town of Berkeley Springs. The castle features large stoned wall ballroom, wide carved staircase, tower room, and an interesting collectionof antiques.(304) 258-4374
- Museum of Berkeley Springs. Located on the second floor of the Roman Bath building in Berkeley Springs State Park. Open Memorial Day through October. Free admission.
- Cacapon State Park located 10 miles west of Berkeley Springs off of RT. 522 South. Watch for sign. This is a 6,115 acre park with cabins, lodge, dining facility, swimming, boating, fishing, hiking trails, bridal trails, 18 hole championship golf course, and other recreational activities. - Homeopathy Works in Berkeley Springs. Licensed by the West Virginia Board of Pharmacy, the museum contains more than 200 years of the history of homeopathic medicine. Handcrafted oak cabinets house hundreds of bottles of homeopathic remedies in tablets and tinctures. Visitors may watch the manufacturing of medicine through a glass-walled room.
